Our Lady of the Gulf Church

Our  beautiful church has been tarnished several times by Mother Nature with all its forces. Still, it continues to rise from the ashes of destruction to recover its former beauty.

Below, you will find some thumbnails of our parish journey in order to give you a glimpse of how, in spite of the destructive forces of nature, we can still grow strong at the broken places in our lives. Click on picture to see full views.

Our Lady  of the Gulf parish was established in 1847. The first church was built in 1850. Fire destroyed   that church in 1907. This picture shows the charred ruins of the church

This picture shows the blessing of the Church bells. The bells were taken from a cotton gin in New Orleans and erected in the main tower of the present church, built in 1908, to replace the one destroyed by fire. The bells, named after the two gentlemen who donated them are still in operation today

Bishop Leo Fahey, Bay St. Louis, a native son, and priest, became bishop of Baker City. When he died, his funeral took place at his home church, Our Lady of the Gulf Church. The picture includes a view of the inside of the church as well as the High Mass that was celebrated for his funeral.

Two altar servers kneel before the altar of repose on Holy Thursday night. Jesus invited his disciples to "watch and pray" with Him, following the Last Supper as we went to the Mount of Olives to pray. The church continues the tradition of inviting its parishioners to join Jesus and pray with Him as he enters into his Passion.
